After removing the existing vegetation from the former rental property, they added this lush paradise. Here we have countless plant species of varying shapes and sizes. They are all contained within the tight boundary of this planting strip and with the wonderful backdrop of one of my favorite new colors, light brown! I love seeing this desert color up here in the Northwest. This building also has a darker shade of brown as well! This wonderful palette has been appearing all over and I hope to capture some images of its proliferation soon. In a few short years, the conifers, spaced approximately 12 inches on center, will grow to provide aple shade from the sun and protect the north side units from the summer wind.

Beauty in Proportion

This is a great example of Seattle vernacular. This craftsman style of home typically uses large low sloped roofs to create a sense of compression, the roof extents past the edge of the house to enhance this idea. Here we have a clever addition upon that roof idea, creating a beautifully balanced box with a new flat roof on top. There is also still a trace of the old roof line above the porch! What great care in color matching with the rest of the house. A fantastic example of a well thought addition to this small Capitol Hill home.

An Elegant Detail

When we walk around the north side of this home, we can truly appreciate the craftsmanship and architectural intent. The plate glass windows face east, while the white mini-blinds inside keep out the blazing, Seattle morning sun. The shutters work well as elements to balance the facade composition, and flower boxes help to articulate the flat elevation. A truly wonderful delight.
